The idea
You learn it by building it
Twelve teaching modules are built into the assembly. You don’t just follow steps — at each stage you learn what the part does and why it’s there: how a 3D printer works, trapped nuts, blind joints, linear rails, belt tension, the power supply, stepper motors, lead screws, the toolhead, Klipper, the heated bed and strain relief, and filament.
Nobody else sells a printer kit as a course. That’s the point of the S1.

Philosophy
Open by design
The S1 is built from common, off-the-shelf parts and runs free, open software. That means cheap repairs, easy upgrades, and no lock-in — and it means a student who learns on an S1 has learned about 3D printers generally, not about ours specifically.
Options
Kit or assembled
Kit — for individuals, families and anyone who wants the build experience. This is what the S1 is for.
Assembled — for schools and camps that want a machine working on day one. Schools generally only get the assembly experience once, so most choose this. A short course covering the same twelve teaching modules, without the assembly, is available separately.
